If we’re all flying to the same destination, why does class matter?

My answer is always the same: comfort is king. One of my non-negotiable travel rules is simple — if the flight is longer than seven hours, I’m booking business class.

But here’s the secret: I rarely pay full price.

Below are the methods I’ve personally used — and yes, they work.

✈️ 1. Bid for an Upgrade

Airlines like Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, and Virgin Atlantic allow passengers to bid for upgrades if you’re a loyalty member.

How it works:

  • Join the airline’s loyalty programme
  • Book an economy ticket (not the lowest fare — this matters)
  • Place a bid weeks or days before departure

Pro tip:
Always bid reasonably — the lowest bids rarely succeed. If you’re travelling as a couple or group, your chances increase significantly.

💳 2. Upgrade Using Miles or Points

In my opinion, Emirates has one of the best points systems.

  • You can buy points even when you’re not travelling
  • Accumulate miles via linked credit cards (Etihad does this well)
  • Redeem points to upgrade instead of purchasing business class outright

Learn how your preferred airline’s system works — it pays off.

🔍 3. Google “Floating” Business Class Tickets

Some airlines release unsold business class seats as floating tickets. A Google search within your preferred travel week can reveal surprisingly affordable options.

It’s risky — but when it works, it really works.

This one is for flexible travellers.

🚫 4. Over-the-Counter or In-Flight Upgrades

I’ve tried this twice — and wouldn’t recommend it.

Upgrades at the airport or in-flight are usually more expensive than bidding or points. Use this only if the price genuinely makes sense.

😊 5. Be Kind (and Lucky)

This has happened once — and only once.

I dressed well, was friendly, and casually asked if business class had open seats. The flight wasn’t full, and I was upgraded for free.

This is pure luck — but it never hurts to ask.

✨ Final Thoughts

The first three methods above are my go-to strategies. They require planning, awareness, and a little patience — but they save you a significant amount.

Let me know which method worked for you, and I’ll see you next month with more travel deals, hacks, and insider tips.

Until then,
